6 important principles of kitchen design

The kitchen is the very heart of the home, both in terms of importance and location. We spend more time in the kitchen than in any other room, which is why many kitchens these days are combining open plan layouts with living rooms. A perfectly thought-out kitchen should not only be beautiful, but also functional. And this is not as difficult to achieve as you think. Below are 6 important principles to consider when designing or redeveloping a kitchen.

Kitchen island

Cups, dishes in the dryer and towels - these are the realities of modern cuisine. Do you really want to see it all in the very center of your home?

We know that many people install sinks and even hobs on kitchen islands, but we are totally against - these things should be separate. It is not possible to create a suitable wall panel for a hob that is exposed to an island. And that can be dangerous when it comes to cooking. Plus, then you won't be able to use the island for a number of other things. Moreover, do you really want your kids to do their homework next to boiling oil or water? And what is the cost of cleaning it all…. CLEANING!

Shells are no better. The magazines always show you perfectly clean kitchens without any hint of dirty dishes ... but when was the last time you saw your own kitchen without dishes? Even the most zealous fanatics of cleanliness in the kitchen always have a dirty cup or dishwasher-proof dishes or a towel hung to dry next to the sink. This is the reality of the kitchen. And none of the above should be put on public display.

A good island is located in the area where food preparation takes place. And, in fact, the only thing that is needed there is a solid, wear-resistant surface. Quartz agglomerate countertops have such properties , in addition, they are easy to clean and hygienic due to the absence of pores.

Working triangle in the kitchen

The working triangle is a figurative figure made up of imaginary lines that connect the sink, hob, and refrigerator. The center of the triangle is where you usually find yourself in the process of preparing food. Imagine your kitchen in your mind, and you will understand what it is about. A kitchen with a small triangle, for all its ergonomics, can hinder movement. In a kitchen with a large triangle, you will have to take more steps, but in a spacious room it is much more enjoyable to prepare food. The choice is yours. Most importantly, remember that your cooking zone should be inside the triangle.

Think of the table size as the plane on which you cook your food. And this is where "more" is not always "better." The edges of the table that go beyond the kitchen triangle will vegetate idle, i.e. this space will not be used and the kitchen space will be less functional.

Basic distances

The space between the dishwasher and the cupboard is one of the many important distances you will want to keep to a minimum.

In addition to the kitchen triangle, there are a number of other equally important distances on which the functionality of your kitchen really depends. Just think about those bodily movements that you have to do almost constantly: put dirty dishes in the dishwasher, put the washed dishes on the shelves, walk to the closet and bring the necessary utensils for cooking. Reducing these paths greatly simplifies your life in the kitchen. Once you set up a storage space in front of the dishwasher, unloading becomes a quick and painless process.

Upper cabinets

Storage space is needed. But if there is too much space, then, most likely, it will be littered with unnecessary garbage. We do not recommend hanging cabinets on every kitchen wall, because such an arrangement can visually turn even the most spacious kitchen into a tiny and gloomy room. A great option: make a cabinet from floor to ceiling and place it on one of the three walls - the kitchen will look more spacious.

Power supply

Food sources in the kitchen are used for more than just kitchen appliances. Do not skimp on their quantity.

Power requirements should never be underestimated. We usually install a certain number of outlets for small household appliances. Nevertheless, for some reason, the banal truth is forgotten that a modern person who spends so much time in the kitchen certainly needs more chargers and other attributes of everyday life. If you count, then out of 10 installed sockets, at best 3 will be free. The rest will be constantly used for a coffee maker, coffee grinder, multicooker, blender, mobile chargers, bottle sterilizer and more. If you don't like the look of the outlets, then use one of the many modern ways to disguise them.

Built-in appliances

Consider pairing your appliances with cabinets and countertops. This way you can achieve a harmonious look in your kitchen and become more flexible in your choice of appliances .

If you are planning a major overhaul of the entire kitchen, and not just want to make a small rearrangement in order to cram a free-standing stove or oven there, then you should think about kitchen integration. This means you can integrate various items into kitchen cabinets, or place them on countertops. Or, speaking of refrigerators and dishwashers, you can design them in the same style as kitchen cabinets.

The kitchen integration process itself can be extremely tedious, but it gives you a lot of flexibility in the choice of appliances and their location. And instead of a single 90 cm oven (which may not be used at all!), Located under the hob, you can install several smaller ovens and place them at eye level so that you do not have to bend over to them every time. Don't underestimate the convenience of using multiple ovens. The built-in appliances, among other things, give the kitchen additional uniformity, and the clarity of the lines creates the illusion of more space even in the smallest kitchens.
